Chapter 16: The Slap

Neve's POV

Halina was sitting at my kitchen table when we came in.

She sat with her back straight and her handbag on her lap, in the chair Ansel always took.

The Monsignor stood by the stove with his hat in his hands.

He looked as if he would give a great deal to be somewhere else.

A manila folder lay in front of Halina, closed, with her gloved hand on top of it.

"I let myself in," she said. "I still have a key."

"You don't have the right to it," said Ansel from the doorway.

"I have the right of a mother."

I put my bag on the counter.

I had not planned what I would say.

I had only decided that I would not be the one to leave the room.

"Say what you came to say," I told her.

"I came to speak to you, Neve. Not to my son."

"You can say it in front of him."

"I would rather not." She turned her head the quarter inch it took to look at me. "Very well."

She opened the folder.

Inside were photocopies, a column of figures and a name I knew.

*Pawlak, J.*

"These are the pharmacy records," said Halina. "Eleven years. I have copies of every one, and the clinic invoices. By Sunday, every family in the parish will have a letter."

"Saying what?" I asked.
