Chapter 20: Sunday
The Monsignor's office smelled of old books and cold coffee.
He sat behind a desk the size of a door, in his black cassock, with a mug of tea beside a blotter and a framed photograph of a Polish village on the wall.
I sat across from him in my grey coat and did not take off my gloves.
Ansel waited in the car.
I had asked him to.
"Mrs. Kowalczyk, I am very sorry," the Monsignor said. "My hands are tied. The archdiocese received a letter on Monday morning."
"From Halina."
"From the chair of the board of the parish's hall trust. She cited a family dispute and the unsuitability of a public event."
"She cited me," I said.
"She cited several people."
"And you accepted that."
"I did not accept it," he said, wearily. "I was informed of it. There is a difference, though not as great a one as I would like."
I leaned forward.
"Father, I'm going to say something that isn't polite," I said.
"I have a good deal of practice with those," he said.
"You stood in my kitchen with your hat in your hands and let her say it."
