Chapter 22: Ask Me in Spring
He sat at the kitchen table with the envelope in front of him and did not touch it.
It was nine at night.
The row house was warm, and the radiator under the window knocked twice and went quiet.
I stood at the counter in my socks with a mug in my hands and watched him.
He had changed out of the suit into the grey sweater.
His hair was still damp from the shower, and there was a small scrape on his knuckle from the sacristy cupboard.
"You can open it," I said.
"I have read it," said Ansel.
"You've read twelve lines. You haven't read what I'm asking," I said.
"What are you asking?" said Ansel.
"Nothing yet. I told you to move."
He looked at the envelope for a long moment.
Then he reached into the drawer under the table, where he had always kept his pens, and took out the one he used for the shop ledgers.
He uncapped it.
He did not open the envelope.
He turned it face down so that the blank back lay under the lamp, and he wrote on the paper in his square slanting hand.
It took him a long time.
When he was done he capped the pen and turned the envelope around and slid it across the table to me.
