Chapter 18: Laney's Plan

Laney locked the diner door at ten, flipped the sign, and dropped four mugs on the counter.

"Okay," she said. "Everybody sit. This is a war council and I'm the general."

Dale took the stool nearest the exit.

Wyatt took the one beside me.

I put the cream envelope on the counter, and the four of us looked at it.

"Front row," Laney said. "She wants you in the front row, in a dress, with a camera on your face. That's not an invitation. That's a trap with a bow on it."

"She wants a shot of me looking jealous," I said. "She wants her fans to see I came."

"So you go."

"I go."

"And you bring the whole tablet with you." Laney hit the counter with her palm. "My cousin runs the projection booth at the Rialto. He told me the screen over the stage runs a sponsor loop before the show. He says anyone who hands him a drive can get ninety seconds on it, and he doesn't ask what's on the drive."

"Your cousin will do that?"

"My cousin hates Lakeview. They made him cut a ribbon for the tour bus." She shrugged. "He said, and I quote, 'if it's something good I'll do it for free.'"

Dale spoke for the first time.

"What happens to me?"

"You sit in the front row with us," I said. "You don't say a word until she says yours."

"They'll arrest me."

"Not for being in a seat." Wyatt turned on his stool. "You have a statement with the detective as of this morning. That's a witness. I'd stand next to you myself."

Dale looked at him, then down at his hands.

"Why would you?"
