Chapter 24: Five Chairs, Full
Claudia lifted the lid of the first box on Saturday morning.
The smell of old paper came up out of the barn loft in a small gray cloud.
I sat on a pile of feed sacks beside her with a pencil behind my ear.
Marcello stood at the top of the ladder with his hands pressed together.
Nathan and Colin waited below with their sleeves rolled, because Claudia had asked them to carry, and nobody argues with a woman holding a box.
It was full of paper.
Claudia took out the top sheet and held it to the light from the loft window.
The typescript was brown at the edges, and her old margins ran down it in blue ink.
"The Saginaw Valley Boarding House," she read, "and the Economy of Credit, 1871 to 1893."
Her voice cracked on the date.
"Chapter three."
"Claudia," said Marcello, from the ladder.
"Don't you speak yet."
She read the first paragraph aloud.
It was good.
It was better than good.
It was the sentence I had been reaching for all winter.
She had written it at twenty-six, with a cheap pen, and I put my hand over my mouth.
When she finished she lowered the page.
"Well," she said, unsteadily. "I was rather clever."
"You were," I said.
"Pencil, please."
I gave her the pencil.
She looked at it for a long moment, and then she held it out to me again.
"I want you to write the first note," Claudia said. "I want you to read it as a stranger would."
I took the page on my knee.
I read all of it, slowly, to the bottom, while three men held their breath.
Then I wrote in the margin, in my small slanting hand.
Go on.
Claudia looked down at the two words for a very long time.
She put her face in her hands and her shoulders shook.
Marcello came up the last rungs of the ladder and knelt in the dust and put his arms around her.
She let him.
