Chapter 22: Black Sand
The bonfire popped and threw sparks up at the stars.
It stood on the black sand at the edge of a small cove north of Pepeekeo.
The road ended there, and only the fishing families came.
Manny had built it that afternoon out of driftwood.
Dean had spread a wool blanket beside it and set a thermos of hot tea on a rock.
The surf came in long and soft, white on the black.
"Mari," Manny said.
"Before we say it."
"Wait," I said.
I stood between them in the firelight with my shoes in my hand.
I could hear the sea and the fire, and the sound of two men not breathing.
"I'm going to say it first," I said.
"But not like this."
"How?" Dean said.
I put my shoes down on the sand.
"Like this," I said, and pulled my dress over my head.
I dropped it on the blanket.
I stood naked in the firelight, with the wind off the water on my skin.
Neither of them said a word.
I took Manny's hand and Dean's hand, and I walked backward into the sea.
The first wave was warm.
It ran up my shins, and my calves, and my thighs.
I kept walking, pulling them with me, until the water was at my waist, and the black bottom shifted under my feet.
The fire was a small orange star behind them.
"Take your clothes off," I said.
They took them off on the beach and came into the water one after the other, and the sea slid up their bodies.
Manny reached me first.
He took me by the hips and drew me against him, and his cock pressed hard and hot against my belly under the water.
"Oshiro," he said, and his voice cracked.
"Mari."
I kissed him.
It was a deep, slow, salt kiss, and the waves lifted us a little and set us down.
Dean came up behind me.
He put his hands on my waist and his mouth on my neck.
I felt him, hard and warm, against the small of my back.
"Good," he said, against my skin.
"You're so beautiful in the water."
I leaned back against his chest and Manny kept my face tipped up.
