Chapter 16: Unfit

The petition came by courier nine days later.

Holly read it aloud at the kitchen table while Ellis buttered toast and the housekeeper pretended not to listen.

"Petition of a beneficiary of the Pembroke family trust," she read. "Concerning the fitness of the trustee."

"Meaning me," I said.

"Meaning you. It says the trust has a clause. If the trustee is found unfit by a two-thirds vote of the board, the voting power passes to the eldest son."

Ellis put the knife down.

"Chase."

"Chase," Holly said. "He's asking for a special meeting. Next Friday. He wants to, quote, demonstrate the trustee's impairment in person."

The housekeeper set the coffee pot down harder than she needed to.

"Impairment," she said. "She's the first one in this house who ever cleared her own plate."

Ellis looked at me across the table.

He'd looked at me that way in his old bedroom, the day he got home.

"What's he going to do?" he said.

"Ask me questions," I said. "About a life I don't remember."

"Do you remember it?"

The room got very quiet.

Holly's eyes went to me, then to her plate.

"Some of it," I said.

It was the truth, and it wasn't.

That night Holly sat on my bed with a legal pad and quizzed me on the role's file until two in the morning.
