Chapter 17: Semifinal
We didn't move until the truck went around us.
The driver leaned on his horn the whole way past and yelled, "Get a room!" out his window.
Beck put his forehead on the steering wheel and laughed until he couldn't breathe.
I found my claw clip under the seat.
He drove back to Columbus with one hand on the wheel and the other one holding mine on the console, and neither of us said anything about it for sixty miles.
At the Hartwell curb he said, "Daytime."
"Daytime," I said.
"Did you pick it?"
"I picked it."
He nodded like I'd told him the score of a game he'd already watched.
Then he kissed me again, short and hard, and I got out of the car with my face on fire.
Betsy was waiting at the window of 412.
She'd seen the whole thing.
She was holding up a sign she'd made on a pizza box in about forty seconds.
It said FINALLY.
The semifinal was the next night.
Online again, from the library basement, against the graduate gaming society's team.
The sophomore came in her splint and sat behind us on a rolling chair with a notebook.
"I'm the analyst now," she said. "I'm going to write down everything you do wrong and read it out loud after."
"That's just bullying," the grad student said.
"It's analysis."
Betsy came down the stairs in her purple hat with a tray of orange slices arranged in the shape of an F.
"Team mom," she said. "I'm also mad at Callie for not telling me details, so she gets the seeds."
"There are no seeds in oranges."
"I'll find some."
Beck was already at the station next to mine.
He didn't look at me when I sat down.
He just slid a granola bar onto my keyboard, the way the senior always did.
The senior saw it and raised both eyebrows.
"That's my move," he said.
