Chapter 22: Borrowed Account

I read it three times on the union floor with flour on my hands.

"babe can you play my ranked tonight? I'm at the lake."

"already logged in lol. you're welcome."

Beck read it over my shoulder.

He didn't say anything for a while.

Then he said, "That explains the scrims."

"What scrims?"

"Varsity scrims. In person, in the practice room. She's always worse in person. Way worse. Carver always says she's tired, or her wrist hurts, or the chair's wrong."

"And nobody asked?"

"Her rank was top five hundred. Nobody argues with a number."

Betsy had her phone out again, her thumb already moving.

"I'm posting it."

"No," I said.

"Callie, it's right there. It's cheating. It's her sponsor."

"Wait."

I pulled up Sutton's public profile on my phone.

Every ranked game is on there, with the date, the time and the character.

I scrolled back to July.

The week of the twelfth.

Sutton's own stream page had a post from that week.

A dock, a lake, sunglasses, "offline till sunday, touching grass."

Her ranked history for that same week had twenty-six games.

Most of them were after midnight.

Every one of them was on a carry.

Sutton is a shotcaller who plays mages.

She'd never streamed one game on a carry in her life.

She'd climbed a hundred and forty spots in five days, from a dock.

Beck leaned in and pointed at one of the games.

"That's his build," he said quietly. "Same item order. Same everything. I've watched him do it three hundred times."

The union was still loud around us, people eating the last of the lemon bars.

I put the phone face down on my knee.

"If we post it," I said, "it's a screenshot war."
