Chapter 13: The Clip

Donnie sent the clip with no message at all.

Nash watched it on Tuesday night, standing in his kitchen with a spoon of cereal halfway to his mouth.

A man in a Montreal blazer sat in a radio studio, smiling.

"Brannagh is a special player," the man said. "Our captain recruited him personally. He has been very persuasive."

The host asked what that meant.

"It means we are patient," the man said. "Good things come to us."

Nash played it three times.

He thought of a pond, and a rope of twisted white cotton, and a hoarse voice saying, I have never in my life not looked at you.

Then he put the spoon in the sink and opened an airline app.

Boston had Wednesday off.

By four o'clock he was standing in the lobby of a building in Old Montreal, still in the 29, with his duffel on his shoulder.

The doorman from the pavement looked at him for a long moment.

Then he pressed the elevator button without a word.

Gaspard opened the door in gray sweatpants with his hair wet from the shower.

He took one look at Nash's face and stopped smiling before he had started.

"You did not text."

"I wanted to see you do it."

"Do what?"

Nash held up his phone and pressed play.

"Our captain recruited him personally."

The little voice filled the loft.
