Chapter 22: The Free Agent
"Why?" Nash said, to the ceiling of the suite.
"Montreal would give me the extension the day you were traded."
"And you said no."
"Yes."
"Eight years. The letter on your chest."
"It is only a letter."
Nash turned his head on the couch cushion.
Gaspard lay on his back beside him with his eyes closed, one arm across his stomach.
"You gave up the C," Nash said. "For a bet."
"For a block in South Boston."
"Say that again."
"No."
Nash grinned at the ceiling until his face hurt.
On Wednesday, Gaspard's right wrist was the size of a grapefruit.
He had blocked a slap shot in the third period of game seven and said nothing about it for two days.
"It is fine," he said, at Nash's kitchen table.
"It's purple."
"It is a color."
"Give it here."
Donnie sat across from them in a Boston sweatshirt, eating cereal out of the box and watching.
Nash pulled a roll of white tape from his hockey bag and took Gaspard's forearm in both hands.
