Chapter 17: Spend Your Own
Hazel's POV
"It's the retainer," Bram said.
He didn't take the slip back.
"I paid Paula five thousand on Monday. I should have told you."
"Yes, you should."
"I was going to, after Thursday."
"After Thursday," I said. "So I'd win or lose with your money in it and never know which."
"That's not what I meant."
"What did you mean?"
He rubbed his jaw.
"I meant that I couldn't watch you walk in there with nothing," he said.
"I have my own mouth and my own recording and a lawyer who bills by the hour." My voice shook. "I have a rule, Bram. One rule. No one decides what I spend."
"I know."
"Do you?"
"You've said it twice since the dinner."
"Because the last man took my whole wage and put a smile on it."
That landed.
He took it without moving.
I put the slip on the prep table and went out the back door before I said something worse.
At Paula's office, she handed me the court file without looking up.
"Statements, the photographs of the cars, Mr. Keller's affidavit," she said. "Read the affidavit. It's the one that helps."
I read it standing at her window.
It was four lines long.
Bram had sworn that on a Saturday this autumn he photographed Neil Gerrard's sedan beside Danica's coupe at the Lakeshore Room.
The second line said he had first seen that sedan in the same lot on a Saturday in March.
He had dated it, and signed.
I read the March date three times.
