Chapter 23: The Question

At seven o'clock on Tuesday he stood on my landing with nothing in his hands.

He had not brought flowers, or noodles, or a plan.

He had tied his shoes.

"The buzzer's broken," he said.

"I know. Gus told me you stood out there for six minutes."

"Eight. A kid let me in."

"Your mother got my number from Gus," he added. "She texted me a photo of the hotel robe."

"She's keeping it."

"She told the front desk that, in writing."

I held the door, and he came into my one room and stood very still.

He saw the radiator, the narrow bed, and the good chair by the window.

Then he saw the sill, and every trophy lying on its face.

He didn't say anything about them.

I loved him a little for that.

I sat in the chair, and he lowered himself to the floor with his back against the bed and his bad knee stuck out in front of him.

It was the same position we had eaten noodles in, and neither of us mentioned it.

"I've been thinking about what to say for two days," he said.

"That sounds like you."
