Chapter 6: The Coat Room

I had planned to kiss him once, quickly, for the directors.

Then his hand came up along my jaw, and the plan stopped existing.

His mouth was warmer than I expected.

He kissed me slowly and thoroughly, in front of eight directors, and my fingers closed in the front of his jacket.

Somebody at the long table said, "Well, that settles it."

Somebody else began to clap.

I heard Cory stop walking.

I did not care. I kissed Harvey back, and he made a low sound against my mouth that I felt in my knees.

When we broke apart, he was breathing as hard as I was.

"Excuse us," he said to the directors, in a voice that was almost his own.

He stood and pulled out my chair, and I let him lead me out of the dining room with the whole table looking.

The coat room was a narrow space behind the hall with a brass rail, forty hangers and one dim lamp.

He shut the door.

Neither of us said anything.

Then I had my back against the coats and his hands on either side of my head, and I was kissing him again.

It wasn't for the directors anymore.

It was for six years of waiting to be wanted like this.

His mouth moved to my jaw and down my throat, and when I tipped my head back he found the place under my ear and stayed there.

"Tilda," he said into my skin.
