I read it out loud at the kitchen table.
Carrie stopped chewing.
Matt came down the hall in his jeans, still pulling on a T-shirt, and took the phone out of my hand and read it himself.
"Next March," he said.
"Next March."
"He can't stop it," Carrie said. "Right? He can only make it slow?"
"He can make it slow and loud," I said. "A wife who left him for a glassblower, and him the brave husband fighting for his marriage. He'll get a year of headlines out of it."
Matt put the phone face down on the table.
Then he crouched next to my chair so he was looking up at me.
"I'd marry you next March," he said. "I'd marry you in the bank lobby. I'd marry you on a bucket."
"You already did that."
"Then I'm halfway there."
Carrie opened the donut box and pushed it at both of us.
"Eat," she said. "You're both disgusting. I'm so happy."
I didn't call Ian.
I called the head buyer instead, the way I'd promised.
"Is it ready?" she said, with no hello.
"Almost. I'm sending you three bottles. Don't show anyone."
