I said yes on the condition that it was somewhere public.
Tori picked the diner by our old college.
Of course she did.
Matt drove me down on Thursday and parked across the street, under a dying maple.
"You don't have to wait," I said.
"I'm not waiting." He cracked his window and took out a gas-station sandwich. "I'm parked."
"You said that in April."
"It was true in April."
He looked at me.
"Thirty minutes," he said. "Then I come in and order pie and sit at the counter, and I don't care how weird it is."
"Deal."
The diner hadn't changed in twelve years.
Same red booths with tape on the seats.
Same pie case by the register, turning slowly under a light.
Tori was in the back booth, where we used to cram for organic chemistry finals with one plate of fries between us.
I almost didn't know her.
No makeup.
Hair pulled back in a plain elastic, not glossy, not red in the light, just hair.
