Chapter 26: The Old Master
I ran.
The oldest of the crew was on his side on the brick floor in front of the open furnace.
His pipe had rolled away against the bench.
Matt was on his knees beside him, dragging him back from the heat by his shoulders.
"Call it," Matt said to me. "Call it now."
I was already dialing.
Another ran for the wool blanket and folded it under the old man's head.
He was gray and sweating, and his lips had gone a bad color.
"Don't you dare," Matt kept saying. "Don't you dare. You hear me?"
The old man opened his eyes.
He looked up at Matt.
"Wasted glass," he said.
Matt made a sound that wasn't a laugh.
The ambulance came in nine minutes.
Matt counted every one of them out loud.
It was his heart.
A small attack, the doctor at the county hospital said that afternoon.
They put two stents in him and kept him four days.
On the third day Matt and I sat by his bed while he ate green gelatin with real contempt.
"How long before he's back at the furnace?" Matt asked the doctor.
The doctor looked at the chart, and then at the old man.
