Chapter 13: Fifty-Two Years
They sat on the study floor with the lamp between them and the letters in two piles.
Do-yoon read his grandfather's first.
The paper was thin and brown at the edges, and the date at the top said March 1974.
"My dear Hwan," it began.
"The harbor was cold today, and I stood on the pier like a fool for an hour because you said you might come."
"You did not come. I am not angry. I only wanted to tell someone that I waited."
Do-yoon read the next one, and the next.
They were not business letters.
They were about weather, and boat engines, and a coat one of them had left in the other's car.
They said "I miss you" in a dozen plain ways.
Across the lamp, Jae-wook read the looping hand of his own grandfather, and his lips moved a little.
"He called yours 'my heart' in every letter," Jae-wook said, in a thick voice.
"Mine called yours 'my dear' in every one."
"My grandfather wrote that he sang to him once, badly, in a boat."
Do-yoon laughed, and it came out wet.
Neither of them had ever heard of any of it.
Two men who had shouted at each other across a hundred boardrooms had spent fifty-two years writing love letters.
