Chapter 23: The Pier
The wedding was set for four in the afternoon, when the sun came low and gold across the water.
By three, the lighthouse pier on Jeju held a hundred and twenty chairs.
They were plain white wooden chairs, borrowed from the village hall, in rows on either side of a long, narrow aisle of planks.
At the far end, where the pier ended in open sea, stood a small table covered in a white cloth.
On it, in a silver frame, stood the photograph of the two young men laughing on the stone pier with their sleeves overlapping.
Beside it stood the other one, the two old men in the white bed with their foreheads together.
Somebody had put a jar of chrysanthemums between them.
Do-yoon stood in the back room of the keeper's house, facing a mirror.
Ji-ho stood behind him, fussing with a pocket square.
"Hold still."
"I'm still."
"You're vibrating."
"I'm not."
"You have vibrated since six this morning. Se-ra says you asked the florist if the flowers were dry."
"They might have been wet."
