Chapter 17: The Warehouse
I laughed.
I couldn't help it. It came straight up out of me, in the middle of the atrium, with three hundred people watching.
Laurence frowned down from the stairs. "Something funny?"
"Nobody calls me Odessa," I said. "My father. My husband. Your mother, when she wants to be nasty."
I turned the folder around and held it up so the front rows could see.
"I've been head of windows for four years. I sign every work order in this building. I've never once signed O.F."
Bex was already digging in her tool belt.
She came out with a folded work order, soft as cloth, covered in sawdust.
She held it up next to the invoice.
D.F., in pencil, with a little reindeer antler on the D.
"She draws the antler on everything," Bex said loudly. "It's annoying. Ask anybody."
"It's true," said the old electrician. "It's very annoying."
Down at the front a woman from receiving held up her clipboard. "She signed my delivery slip on Friday. It's got the antler."
The murmur in the atrium changed.
Laurence's face went blotchy above his collar.
"Initials can be anything," he said. "The review will decide."
