Chapter 32: State Street, 2 a.m.
I let the paper fall back into place.
I opened the little side door onto State Street.
The cold came in, the same cold as a year ago.
I stepped out onto the sidewalk in my work jacket and walked to him.
He didn't move until I was close enough to touch.
Then he took one hand out of his pocket and pushed his hood back.
"You're supposed to be in bed," he said.
"So are you."
"I come here every install week."
"I know. Your sister-in-law had pictures."
His mouth moved, not quite a smile.
"It's two in the morning," I said. "The clause has been dead for two hours."
"I know. I was counting."
"From up there?"
"From the library. I watched the clock. It's four minutes slow, so I waited four more minutes." He looked down at me. "Then I came down here, because this is where I've always waited."
Behind me, in the corner of Window Seven, the little tin man stood on his tin sidewalk.
I didn't tell him it was there.
Footsteps came around the corner from Washington.
A lot of footsteps.
