Chapter 13: The Circle
The widow's roof beam gave way behind me and threw sparks across the frost.
Nobody else moved.
Twelve outcasts stood in the firelight and stared at the man on his knees.
"Again," the one-eyed man said hoarsely. "Say it again."
"No," I said. "He says it again in the hall. In front of the council."
Bram hauled the driver to his feet by his torn collar.
"Tonight," he said. "Before she knows he talked."
We drove him around the lake at three in the morning in the bed of Bram's truck.
I held all three of them still the whole way.
The eldest elder met us on the pack hall steps in his coat over striped pajamas.
He listened with his hand on his cane.
"Say it to me, son," he said. "Without her."
I turned away and let go.
I felt the hold slide off the three of them.
The driver looked at the old man for a long time.
"I carried the oil," he whispered.
The eldest elder shut his eyes.
Then he took a ring of keys off his belt and unlocked the cellar door himself.
"Noon," he said. "He'll tell the council at noon."
