Rafe's POV
I sat in the third row on the aisle with my hands on my knees and nothing in my pockets.
I had left the pistol in the safe behind the piano.
That was the last thing I did before we left the house, with Camille watching from the hall in her blue dress.
She had said nothing, and I had said nothing, and I had spun the dial.
The Bayou Rose hall was full.
Two hundred folding chairs stood in rows on the wooden floor where we had danced eight weeks before, and every one was taken.
The men wore their funeral suits and the women wore their church hats.
At the back of the room the brass band sat in a loose line with their horns on their knees.
The second line would come after the business.
My mother sat on my right with her rosary in her lap.
On my left sat an old bandsman who had played trombone at four of the Society's funerals.
He had greeted me at the door by shaking my hand, for the first time in eleven years.
