Chapter 11: Beside Me

"A step," I said. "At the church."

Sandro's thumb rested against my bruise, and the whole table watched him.

"Show me where."

"It's gone now. I was already inside."

"Mara."

"Sit down, Sandro," said the Don. "Let your wife eat."

My husband let go of my chin.

He sat, picked up his fork, and ate an entire plate of veal without once taking his eyes off my face.

Bianca kept her phone in her lap and didn't look at it.

After dinner he took my hand and led me upstairs without a word.

In the bathroom he ran the cold tap, wet a towel, and sat me on the edge of the tub.

He knelt in front of me.

His shirtsleeves were pushed to the elbow, and the signet ring on his right hand clicked against the porcelain.

"Hold still."

The towel was cold against my cheek, and his other hand cupped the back of my head.

"A step doesn't leave a hand," he said.

I said nothing.

"Four fingers and the heel of a palm. I've seen enough faces to know." His voice stayed level. "I won't ask you who. I broke that rule once and I'm not good at it."

"Rocco."

The towel stopped.

"He wants something from this house," I said. "Since the wedding. He asked me to bring it to him, and I said no."

"What did he want?"

"Whatever's in your study."

The color left Sandro's face, and then came back darker.

"He put his hand on you," he said.

"I told him I'd tell the Don what he really wants."

"What does he really want?"

"I don't know." It was a lie, and I put it down gently. "Something old."
