I didn't answer him that night.
I slept in the guest wing, with the deadbolt open and the door ajar.
In the morning I went to work.
St. Brennan's ER at seven a.m. smelled like burnt coffee and bleach.

Nobody mentioned it.
Everybody saw it.
A resident handed me a chart and kept his eyes on my forehead.
The unit clerk with two kids and a second job slid a cold pack across the desk without a word.
I pressed it to my face and took bed six.
At eight, Damien walked through the ambulance doors.
No Marcus.
No lawyers.
He stood by the triage desk in his dark coat with snow melting off his shoulders.
