The gun was small and silver.
She held it in both hands, the way she held everything.
It pointed at Damien's chest.
"Celia," he said.
"Don't talk."
"Put it down."
"You don't get to tell me anything anymore."
Marcus had come in behind us.
I felt him stop at the door, and I felt him measure the distance.
Twenty feet.
Too far.
I stepped sideways.
I put myself between the gun and the man I had signed a contract for.
"Ava," Damien said. "Move."
"No."
"Mrs. Kastar," Celia said. "This isn't yours."
"My name is Ava. I'd like you to use it."
"Step aside."
"I'm not going to do that."
Her hands shook.
The barrel drifted from his chest to mine and back.
I kept my voice low and level.
It's the voice I use when a mother is screaming in the hall and the doctor hasn't come out yet.
