I did not tell him at once.
I put the photo on the nightstand, turned off the lamp, and lay awake while the wind got up and shook the windows.
A nor'easter was coming in, and the boats would stay tied up all day.
At six in the morning, with Posy still asleep, I crossed the hall in my T-shirt and let myself into his room.
It was the second bedroom, the small one over the porch.
The main bedroom at the end of the hall had been shut since Callie died, and he had slept on a narrow bed in this one ever since.
He woke the moment the door opened.
"Bridie?"
"Don't talk."
I climbed onto the bed, pushed the quilt down, and straddled his thighs.
He was in boxers and nothing else, warm and heavy with sleep, and the dark hair on his chest went silver in the streetlight.
"Is something wrong?" he asked.
"Yes.
"I need you to be quiet for a few minutes first."
His eyes searched my face.
Then he lay back against the pillow with his hands open on the sheet, waiting.
