Chapter 15: What Posy Heard
Jude's POV
I put the toast down and crouched in front of my daughter.
"Who told you that, bug?"
"Aunt Lena.
"She said it's a secret, but she told me anyway."
Behind me the juice carton hit the counter.
I didn't turn around.
"It isn't a secret," Iris said from the door, in a voice that could have cut rope.
"It's a lie, and a mean one.
"Posy, come and get your shoes, we'll be late for the bus."
"Grandma, what's a daddy kissing?"
"Shoes," Iris said.
I watched my mother steer my daughter out of the kitchen with a hand on her back.
Then I stood up.
Bridie stood by the counter with both arms around herself.
She was very white, with her freckles standing out on her face.
I had seen her angry, and I had seen her wrecked on my cock.
I had never seen her look like a girl waiting to be hit.
"Bridie."
"Let me say it first," she said.
"Please."
"Not here.
"Upstairs."
We went up to her room and she shut the door.
She sat on the edge of the bed and I sat beside her and didn't touch her.
I kept my hands between my knees.
"The Cape Elizabeth job was fourteen months," she said.
"Two boys and a girl.
"The father started sending me texts the first winter.
"He was a married man.
"He said I was the only one who laughed at his jokes."
"Go on."
"I told him no.
"I told him no a lot of times, nicely, because he signed my checks.
"Then in May he came into my room at night.
"He didn't touch me.
"He just stood there with the hall light behind him, and said he knew I wanted it."
Her voice stayed level, which was worse.
"I went to his wife in the morning.
"She said I was a little slut with ideas, and that her husband had never looked at a girl like me in his life.
