Chapter 21: Mine

"Home," I said.

I said it across the whole hall, in my own green dress, with a five-year-old's hand in mine.

"I want to go home.

"With you.

"And I'll tell you the rest when we're there."

The hall made a soft sound, and someone began to clap, and Iris said, "Oh, for heaven's sake, let them go."

Iris took Posy's other hand.

She was already getting her coat and the rabbit.

"She sleeps at my house tonight," she said.

"Don't argue with a woman my age."

We didn't argue.

The harbor lay black outside the front window when we came in, with a single red light blinking on the breakwater.

The house was dark.

Jude hung my coat on the hook and didn't turn on a lamp.

He went to the big leather armchair by the window, the one that had been his father's.

He stood by it with his back to the glass and his hands at his sides.

"Tell me," he said.

I crossed the room and stood in front of him.

I'd been rehearsing for two days, and now it came out plain.

"I won't be your nanny," I said.

"I'll look after Posy because I love her, and you won't pay me for it.

"I'll take the certificate, and I'll take the classroom, and I'll pay my own way.

"I won't be the second wife, either."

"I never," he began.

"Let me finish."

He closed his mouth.

"I won't wear her dress, or sit in her chair, or be the voice that picks up where she stopped.
