Chapter 15: Two Locks

In the other life I came through this gate alone, a little after two, and shut the padlock myself.

I remembered how good the click sounded.

Now Neil Cresset sat on the other side of it in a folding chair, with a clipboard and a banner that said CHECK IN HERE.

Behind him stood his pickup, and behind the pickup a trailer of plastic totes, strapped down like a load of important cheese.

Two men from Birch Street sat flanking him in lawn chairs.

One was from number three and the other from number five, and neither would look at me.

"Evening, Floyd," said Neil. "You're late."

"There was traffic," I said.

"There always is. That's why you plan." He lifted his clipboard. "I count forty-one."

"Forty-one riders," I said. "And a goat."

"We have capacity for twenty. You said so yourself."

"I said a lot of things."

"You said them in Elspeth's yard, on the record." Neil smiled at me warmly.

"If we go in with more than we can carry, we won't be safe," he said. "We'll just be crowded."
