Chapter 19: White Lake

The lodge sleeps twenty, and that night it held fifty-two.

I had a bed chart in Tab 4, laminated, with twenty names on it.

I took it out in the main room at nine o'clock, and nobody looked at me.

They looked at Lucy, who stood on the hearth with her bandaged hand and a mug of something hot.

"Okay," she said. "Bunks first."

The children went to the bunkhouse with the parents who wanted to stay beside them.

They took it over in the time it takes to say lights out.

They sorted themselves among bunks and floor blankets, with a seniority system nobody would explain to an adult.

Neil's eleven-year-old, who had been sick on the lawn, took the top bunk by the window.

She shared it with a girl from Dell Street who had the best flashlight.

By ten they were whispering about the goat.

The main house filled next.

My father had written names on the bunks in marker in 1987, and they were still there.
