Chapter 23: Going Down
On the tenth morning the white edge stood under six hundred feet, and I wanted to go down.
I had my shoes on.
I had the binder under my arm.
Lucy sat at the main table with a mug and looked at me over it.
"No," she said.
"The Low is under six hundred," I said.
"Birch Street is five-sixty," said Lucy.
"It's under six hundred, Lucy."
"It's under six hundred at the top," said Lucy.
"It keeps longest in low places. You told me that. Basements first, and the last to leave."
"I said that," I said.
"You said it in the dry ice voice."
I took my shoes off.
It was the first time in my life that I had been the one who wanted to hurry.
I understood a little of what I had put people through.
We waited another day.
The county crew reached the ridge that afternoon.
They were measuring the air along the roads, and their radio brought us the first clear route home.
Birch Street's living rooms passed before its basements.
The difference went into my binder.
