Chapter 14: Theron Counterattacks
Theron's sedan was parked across Cade's gate when we got home.
He stood beside it with his hands in the pockets of the gray overcoat, gaunt and sleepless.
"Stay in the car," Cade said.
"No."
"Ciara."
"He came for me." I opened the door. "I'll answer him myself."
Cade looked at me for a second, and then he nodded and drove through the gate.
Theron followed us up the drive on foot, fast, and was at the front steps before I had my keys out.
The housekeeper opened the door from inside, and behind her stood Cade's assistant and the driver and a man carrying a box of firewood.
They all found something to look at, and none of them left.
"Ciara, I need to talk to you."
"Talk."
"Not here. Not with them."
"Here is fine," I said. "You wanted to see me, and I'm standing in my house."
His mouth tightened at the word.
He looked past me at Cade, who had come up the steps and stopped one step below, with his hands in his pockets, saying nothing.
"Did he make you do this?"
"I married him on Friday morning, Theron. You were there."
"He's using you." His voice cracked, and he lowered it, and then he didn't. "He's been waiting thirty years to take something of mine. Do you understand that? He's a cold, empty man who takes things, and you're the first one I ever cared about."
It was a good speech.
Five years ago it would have worked on me in under a minute.
"First one you cared about," I said. "Out of how many?"
His eyes flicked, very fast.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you were at the office all week."
"I was."
"Which office?"
I said it lightly, the way you say a thing you already know the answer to, and I watched the color move in his face.
