Chapter 16: What Cade Knew
Nobody spoke in the car.
Cade drove with both hands on the wheel, and I watched the dark streets slide past the window.
The invoice was folded in my coat pocket, and I could feel its corner against my hip.
He parked in the garage and turned off the engine, and we sat there while it ticked.
"Say it," I said.
"I should have told you."
"You told me you found her a week before. You sat behind that desk and told me."
"Yes."
"Why?"
He kept looking at the windshield.
"Because I didn't know you yet," he said. "A week sounded like a thing a stranger could say without it meaning he had been watching."
"But you had been watching."
"Yes."
I got out of the car and went into the house, and he came behind me.
In the hall I took off my coat, and I put the invoice on the table where he had once put down his whiskey.
"Tell me all of it," I said. "Not the clean version."
He stood with his back against the door.
"In November, my brother's accountant sent my office a question about a lease," he said. "It was an apartment I didn't know Theron had."
"The Friday one."
"Yes. I hired a firm to look at it. They found Brynn in a week."
"And then?"
"Then they found the Marlowe."
"On the nineteenth."
"On the nineteenth of November, they put a camera in the lobby." His voice didn't change. "On the twenty-first, I sat in the lobby bar myself and watched a woman in a gray cardigan walk to the elevator."
My mouth had gone dry.
"You saw Shelley two months ago."
"I saw her. That night I didn't know who she was."
