I Prepared for My Wedding, Only to Be Shut Out of My Own Bridal Suite novel · Chapter 1 of 24
Chapter 1: Locked Out
Twenty-eight minutes before her wedding Claire's keycard goes red, the hotel owner opens the door on Kelsey wearing her veil in her bed, and Claire takes the ballroom mic.
Twenty-eight minutes before I was supposed to walk down the aisle, the door to my bridal suite would not let me in.
The hotel manager slid his master card into the lock.
Red light.
He pulled it out and tried again.
Red.
The third time he held it there longer.
Red.
"Miss Stanhope, I'm so sorry," he said. "This card should open every door in the building."
"Then why doesn't it open mine?"
He looked at the little screen on his tablet and swallowed.
"The suite was moved under Miss Dunbar's name at check-in this morning. She changed the access. Nobody can override it without Mr. Ridgeway's say-so."
I stood there in my white satin robe with BRIDE stitched across the back.
My hair was pinned. My face was half done.
Behind me my mother made a small sound.
She was holding my dress in its garment bag, folded over both arms.
"Claire," she said. "Your shoes are in there."
My shoes were in there.
So was my veil, and my bouquet of white garden roses.
So were my grandmother's pearls, the ones she wore on her own wedding day in 1968.
Everything I needed to get married was on the other side of a door with a red light.
I took out my phone and called Mason.
He picked up on the first ring. "Babe, I can't talk, my groomsmen..."
"I'm locked out of the suite. Come up. Now."
He was there in under a minute.
He came out of the elevator in his navy tux, his tie still loose around his neck.
He didn't look at me.
He walked straight past me and pressed his ear against the door of room 612.
He stayed there, listening.
Then his shoulders dropped.
That was the first thing my fiance did on our wedding day.
He checked that she was still asleep.
"Kelsey was up all night doing the centerpieces," he said, still facing the door. "She crashed an hour ago. She's wiped out."
"In my suite."
"It's the only room with a decent bed. Do your makeup next door. I already got you a room."
He turned around and put himself between me and the door.
He didn't lean on it. He stood in front of it, arms loose, feet planted.
Like a bouncer.
"Mason. My veil is in there. My shoes. Grandma's pearls."
"I'll grab it all the second she wakes up. It's not a big deal."
Two of my bridesmaids had come up the stairs and were standing very still by the ice machine.
I looked at my watch.
Three thirty-three.
"You have thirty seconds," I said. "Open that door, or there's no wedding."
He actually laughed.
Then he saw my face, and he stopped.
"Claire. Don't do this. Not today."
"Twenty-five."
"We've been together seven years." He lowered his voice, like the hallway couldn't hear him. "Nobody knows better than me how bad you wanted this day. You're going to blow it up because you have to wait twenty minutes?"
"Twenty."
He didn't move.
He didn't even look at the lock.
"Fifteen."
My mother stepped up beside me with the dress.
"Mason, honey. Just knock."
"Joan, stay out of it."
He'd never spoken to my mother like that in seven years.
"Ten," I said.
The elevator chimed behind us.
A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped out, phone in his hand, jacket open.
Cooper Harrington.
He owned the building.
Two years ago I'd spent eleven months restoring his ballroom, the one where a hundred and eighty people were sitting right now waiting for me.
He took in the red light, my robe, and Mason in front of the door.
"Mr. Ridgeway doesn't own this hotel," he said.
Cooper took a black card from his inside pocket.
Mason stepped toward him. "Hey. Hey, there's somebody sleeping in there."
"Then she's sleeping in a room booked and paid for by Miss Stanhope."
Cooper looked at me, not at Mason.
"Do you want this door open?"
"Yes."
"Five," I said, to Mason.
Mason put his hand flat on the door.
Cooper reached past him and touched the card to the lock.
The light went green.
The door swung in.
The curtains were shut, and the room smelled like my perfume.
There were two champagne glasses on the nightstand.
There was a man's white dress shirt on the floor.
Kelsey Dunbar sat up in the middle of my bed.
She had my grandmother's pearls around her neck.
My veil was pinned in her platinum hair, crooked, the lace pooled on the pillow behind her.
She was wearing Mason's other shirt, the one with his initials on the cuff.
Then she found Mason's face and pouted.
"Mason, you promised she'd use the other room."
Nobody in that hallway said a word.
I walked past Mason into the room.
I sat down on the edge of my own bed and reached for Kelsey's neck.
She flinched like I was going to hit her.
My grandmother showed me how that clasp worked when I was nine.
Press, then turn.
The pearls slid off Kelsey's throat into my palm.
They were warm from her skin.
"Claire," Mason said from the doorway. "It's not what it looks like. She was just trying stuff on."
I pulled the pins out of Kelsey's hair one by one and lifted my veil off her head.
She winced and pulled away.
I folded the veil over my arm and picked up my shoes from the closet floor.
I left the bouquet.
At the door Mason put his hands up.
"Babe. Go do your makeup. We'll talk after. Everybody's downstairs."
"I know," I said. "That's where I'm going."
I took the stairs.
Six floors, barefoot, in a robe, with the pearls in my fist.
My mother came down behind me with the dress.
Above us Mason was calling my name, then swearing.
The ballroom doors were open, and the string quartet was playing something soft.
A hundred and eighty people turned around in their chairs at once.
I walked up the white runner, past the rows of roses, all the way to the front.
I took the microphone off its stand.
It squealed once.
"Hi, everyone," I said. "Thank you for coming. There isn't going to be a wedding."
