Chapter 13: The Trust

Two hundred people turned in their chairs to look at me.

I was still holding Beverly's microphone.

At the head table, Kelsey was crying so hard she had to hold on to the tablecloth.

Mason had both hands flat on the table.

Beverly hadn't moved at all.

"Is it true?" a man called from the second table.

He was one of Beverly's subcontractors. He'd danced with my aunt at our engagement party.

I lifted the microphone.

"My grandmother left me a trust," I said. "It pays out when I marry, or when I turn thirty-five. I've never touched a cent of it."

Nobody spoke.

"A week after we got engaged, I asked Mason for a prenup. To protect it."

I looked straight at him.

"He cried. He said a prenup meant I was planning for the divorce. So I tore it up."

A woman at the front put her fork down very slowly.

"I thought it meant he loved me," I said.

Mason opened his mouth.

Nothing came out of it.

For seven years he'd always had something to say.
