Chapter 16: Kelsey's Price

"I don't want anything from you, Kelsey."

"Yes, you do. It's about your stamp."

I sat up.

Cooper's arm came off my shoulders.

"What about my stamp?"

"Not on the phone. He checks my phone." A sniff. "There's a diner on Savannah Highway. The one with the pie case. Can you come at four?"

"Why would I come anywhere for you?"

"Because I'm the only one who'll tell you," she said, and hung up.

Cooper drove me.

He parked across the lot and stayed in the truck, where he could see the window.

"Twenty minutes," he said. "Then I'm coming in for pie, whether you want me or not."

The diner was half full.

Truckers at the counter, two old women splitting a club sandwich, a family with a birthday balloon.

Kelsey was in the last booth.

I almost didn't know her.

No pink. No waves in her hair.

She had on a gray sweatshirt and leggings, and her hair was pulled back in a rubber band.

There was a glass of milk in front of her, untouched.

Her face was puffy.

She was showing now.

Just a little, under the sweatshirt.
