I Queued Three Hours for Her, But They Didn't Wait Three Minutes for Me novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: Window Seat

I bought a pair of soft sandals at the drugstore on my way back to the villa.

They were nineteen dollars, and the backs didn't touch my heels.

The others came in after midnight, and nobody woke me on the couch.

At seven the next morning, I had my suitcase packed and standing by the front door.

Tony came out of the first bedroom in his boxers and stopped dead.

"What's that?"

"I'm taking the bus home."

"No, you're not." He walked over and put his back against the door. "Dani was in the hospital all night. You made her sick. You'll sit in the car and apologize to her the whole way home."

"I didn't make her sick."

"You told her she ate tacos!"

"She did eat tacos."

Marty had come out behind him, rubbing his face, and I looked at him.

He looked at the floor.

"Move, Tony."

"Dad's going to hear about this," Tony said. "Every word."

"Good. Tell him I took the bus."

He didn't move.

So I stood there and waited, with my hand on my suitcase, and I thought about the line at the rest area.

I thought about how long I had stood in places for people who weren't coming back.

"If you don't step aside," I said, "I'll call the police and tell them my brother won't let me leave a rental house."

Gabe's door was closed.

Tony's face went red, and he stepped aside.

"Don't come crying to me," he said.

"I won't," I said.

I rolled my suitcase down the road toward the bus station, and it was already warm at seven in the morning.

The depot was a covered bench and a sign.

The bus to Riverside came every two hours, and the next one was due at eight.
