Chapter 7: The Ring
The clinic's page had forty-one new one-star reviews, and none of them mentioned an animal.
My manager had printed a few and laid them on her desk.
"Heartless." "Abandons family." "Do not let her touch your dog."
"I know this is a lie," she said. "Half of these people have never been here."
"Dani's post is everywhere."
"I watched the longer clip too." She turned her monitor toward me. "A woman at that restaurant posted what she saw. Two hundred shares."
I watched it.
It showed Gabe's hand on my arm and the woman telling him to let go.
It had two hundred shares, and Dani's had four thousand.
"I can't fire someone for being lied about," my manager said. "But I need you to stay at the front desk for a few days and let this blow over. Smile at everyone."
"I can do that."
"I know you can." She put a hand on my shoulder. "You've been smiling at this clinic for three years."
So I smiled at everyone.
I weighed a golden retriever and scanned a microchip and told a woman her cat's vaccines were up to date.
Nobody mentioned the video, though three people looked at me for a long time.
At four o'clock the waiting room was full.
There was a boy with a hamster in a shoebox, and two men with the same pug, and a woman with a cat carrier on her lap.
The front door opened, and Gabe walked in.
He had a bouquet of red roses and the same black quarter-zip he'd worn at the restaurant.
