Chapter 16: The Letter
Xu Zhengyuan was dressed and out of the door before dawn.
His shirt was buttoned wrong, and the secretary's car was waiting at the end of the lane.
He kissed Mu Qing once on the step, hard, in front of the milk delivery.
"Stay here," he said. "Don't come. If it goes badly I don't want you in the building."
"I'm not a parcel, Zhengyuan."
"I know. I want you to be safe."
"That isn't the same thing," said Mu Qing.
But Xu was already in the car.
Mu Qing watched it go up the lane.
Then he went back inside and lit the stove, because there was nothing else to do with his hands.
Not long after, there was a car at the kerb that he did not know.
It was an old silver saloon, parked badly, with its engine off.
A man was sitting in it with his hands on the wheel.
Mu Qing went out and looked in through the glass.
Dong Wei looked back.
He had not shaved.
His camel coat was creased, and his face was grey.
He wound the window down about an inch.
"Don't call anyone," he said. "I'm alone. I've been here since before light."
"You have nothing to say to me," said Mu Qing.
