Chapter 11: Everything He Didn't Say

Hu Qiaoling waited until the trailer was empty before she put her phone on the table in front of him.

"Two-fourteen this morning," she said. "The Police."

Lanzhou read the post, though he had read it at two-fourteen already, in the dark, with his thumb over his mouth.

"Citizens, a goldfish has joined the production. His name is Director Wang. The Police have no further comment, and are screaming into a pillow."

"Nobody saw that goldfish," said Hu. "The photo shows a hand and a hoodie. The goldfish was in a bag in your suite."

"I see."

"Whoever wrote this post was in your suite at two in the morning. There are two people in your suite."

Lanzhou folded his hands.

He had known this moment would come since the night of the gate scene, and he had a plan, and the plan was terrible.

"It was me," he said.

Hu blinked.

"What?"

"I write to the page. I've written to it for three weeks." He kept his voice quite level. "I told it about the goldfish. I told it about scene twenty-four."

"You told your anti-fan account..."

"It's good company."

For a long moment the only sound was the portable heater.

Hu took off her glasses and pressed her fingers against her eyes.

"You," she said. "You have been sending private messages to the person who compares your face to a lunch menu."

"The lunch menu was accurate."

"Lanzhou."

"I'm an adult," he said, and heard that it came out in his best glacier voice. "And I would like the audit dropped. Audit me if you like."

She stared at him for a long time, and he made himself look straight back.

The lie held, mostly because nobody who knew him could believe he would invent anything so humiliating.

"Fine," Hu said at last, putting her glasses back on. "But you will not do it from the hotel, and you will not discuss the script. And that boy..."
