Chapter 14: The Stove Post

The alarm went off at six.

Yao got as far as "Lanzhou, I have to tell you" before a tissue box hit him in the chest.

"Walk first," said the blanket on the other bed, thickly. "I have a thing of my own to say, and I'll lose my nerve if I eat."

"I can go first."

"Please don't." The blanket lowered, and a red nose appeared. "Please. Just one walk."

It was the first time Yao had ever heard him ask for something without a cue card, and he said yes.

Behind the studio lot, past the fake palace wall, there was a real reservoir with real willows.

It was empty at eight in the morning, with mist on the water and ducks in a sulk.

Lanzhou wore the black cap and a scarf up to his nose, and he carried the thermos of congee under one arm.

"I'm sick and I'm eating a gift," he said. "This is the best day of my life."

"You've said that about four days now."

"They've all been the best."

He took off one glove, found Yao's bare hand in the pocket of his hoodie and put it into his own coat.
