Chapter 23: The Second Night
The plum wine had been sitting in the corner of the courtyard since October.
The jar had a clay lid and a red tag that said "do not drink until something happens."
"Something happened," said Lanzhou.
He had hauled it into the kitchen at one in the morning, still in his dinner jacket, with the snow melting in his hair.
Yao sat on the counter and swung his feet.
"What does the tag mean?"
"The woman who rents me the house wrote it. I never found out what she meant." He pried off the lid, and the whole room filled with the smell of sweet, sour, old fruit. "I'd like to think she meant this."
They drank it out of two cut-glass bowls meant for mango, sitting on the kitchen floor with their backs to the cabinets.
It was cold and tart, and then it was warm all the way down.
"Can I ask you something?" Yao said, after the second bowl.
"You're allowed. Rule two."
"Where do you see yourself in five years?"
Lanzhou considered it with the dignity of a man answering a tribunal.
"At that door," he said at last. "Three steps up. Somebody coming up them with a bad phone and a worse haircut."
"My hair is fine."
