Chapter 21: The Yard

Mason brought the tow truck up to the gate with its roof lights off and its radio on.

He had wired the thumb drive into the dash that afternoon.

I had not known he was going to.

He had only asked, on the Wednesday, whether the truck's speaker was louder than the club's, and I had said yes, and he had gone away with a screwdriver and a look of pure concentration.

He climbed down from the cab and stood beside the open door with his hand on the dial.

"Chief," Mason said.

"Sheriff.

"This is a log of calls from the St. Louis County jail.

"They were logged and held in a drawer in the mailroom.

"My friend Cyrus Mayfield made them to his sister.

"She never heard one.

"Sergeant Pellerin knew they existed."

"Mr. Ekstrom," Marcel said.

His voice had thinned.

"That's a recording obtained in violation of a jail's"

"It was released to the inmate's representative on Thursday," Mason said.

"I signed for it.

"There's a receipt.

"I can show you."

"Play it," the chief said.

Mason pressed the dial.

The speaker above the truck's door crackled.

Cyrus's voice came out of it, out across the whole frozen yard, thin and tired and exactly itself.

"Zo, it's me," Cyrus's voice said.

"Don't hang up.

"He's got me, Zo.

"Marcel.

"He's had me since the summer Mom died."

I heard every man in that line stop breathing.
