Chapter 12: Frost
I woke on the canyon rim under Hoyt's coat, with frost on my eyelashes and bare stone under my hip.
The sky over the Palo Duro had gone pink and gray.
I was naked.
I did not remember walking here, and I did not remember leaving the quilts.
I only knew the bunkhouse was a mile behind me and I was freezing.
I sat up with the coat clutched to my chest.
Red clay was caked on my legs to the knee, and my feet were bleeding at the toes.
Under my fingernails was something dark, and when I turned my hands over in the light, I saw it was not clay.
It was dried blood.
Someone had wiped my mouth, and I could still taste copper.
"Hoyt?" I said.
My voice cracked.
"I'm here," he said.
He was kneeling beside me in his shirtsleeves, with his coat off and his big hands held open at his sides.
