Dessa's POV
On the first Saturday in December I stood on the canyon rim at dawn, naked under Hoyt's coat.
I was trying to wake up my own wolf.
The frost was white on the stone, and the sky over the Palo Duro was gray going to gold.
Hoyt stood in front of me with his hands in his pockets.
Dub sat on a rock with his bad hip stretched out, and Arlo stood a little way off with a thermos in his hand.
None of them had a rifle.
"Quit thinking about it," Hoyt said.
"Thinking is what keeps her down."
"I've thought about nothing else for ten days," I said.
"You've been trying to catch her," he said.
"She's not a rabbit. She's what's left when you let go."
"Let go of what?" I said.
He looked at me with his gray-green eyes, very steady.
"Whatever your daddy told you you were," he said.
I shut my eyes.
I thought of the kitchen at the Loving barbecue, and a stack of paper plates, and a thin voice saying girls like her.
