Chapter 7: The Rim

Hoyt laid me down on two quilts in the bed of his truck, with the whole Milky Way spread out over his shoulder.

We were parked at the end of the canyon road, where the rim fell away in the dark.

The cold smelled of cedar and stone.

I had on his coat and nothing under it.

"Dessa," he said.

"The Amarillo boy knows where you are."

"Tonight he doesn't," I said.

"Tonight there's nothing out here but you and me."

I caught his collar and pulled him down.

He kissed me slowly, with one hand cupping my jaw, and his thumb brushed the corner of my mouth.

He tasted like coffee and cold air.

The truck bed rocked on its springs when he shifted his weight.

"I want to look at you," he said.

"Under the stars."

I let him open the coat.

He pushed it off my shoulders and spread it under me.

The night air hit my bare skin and drew my nipples tight.

He looked at me for a long time.

He ran his big bandaged hand from my collarbone down between my breasts and over my belly to my hip.

It covered nearly all of my torso in one pass.

"You fit in my hand," he said, in wonder.

"I fit in all of you," I said.

I sat up and unbuttoned his shirt.

He let me, and I peeled it off his shoulders and pushed him to lie back on the quilt.

He went down onto his back, and the truck bed barely held him.

His chest rose and fell under the stars, gray-haired and scarred.

His belly was hard from forty years of ranch work.

I opened his belt.

I unzipped him and drew him out, and I held him in both hands.

He was already hard.

"Dessa," Hoyt said.

"You don't have to do anything for me."

"I want to," I said.

"I want to see how much of you I can fit."

I leaned down and kissed the head of him, and he sucked in a sharp breath.

I took it slow.

I licked the thick vein along the underside and mouthed him wet from root to tip.

Then I took the head into my mouth and felt my jaw stretch.
