Chapter 16: Poisoner
The hall stayed silent until Linnea screamed.
It was a high, thin sound, and it hit the rafters and came back down.
"She did it!" Linnea cried. "She did it to me!"
Anders lifted his grey head from my boots.
Linnea had thrown off the blanket.
She stood in the open middle of the floor with one hand clawed at her throat, and her face had gone the blotchy red of a girl who has made herself cry.
"Marit poisoned me," she said, to the walls, to the elders, to anyone. "At the registration, in the side room. She gave me the cup and made me drink. I've been dizzy and sick ever since, and I was too frightened to say."
I almost laughed.
It was a good lie, because it was built from my own morning.
Linnea had pressed that cup into my hands, not the other way around.
Three hundred wolves had not been in the side room.
They were, one after another, turning to look at me.
Anders shifted back where he lay, and he came up off the boards naked and furious and caught his shirt from my grandmother.
"I was at the door that morning," he said. "She didn't give you anything."
"You weren't in the room, Anders," Linnea said, sobbing. "You never are when it matters."
It was the cruelest thing she could have said.
It was also, in the other life, true.
A woman near the front said, "She does look ill."
Another said, "Wolves don't poison."
"A wolf who wants a seat might," a man answered.
I felt the hall tilt.
Hallvard let it tilt for exactly as long as it needed, and then he stepped forward with his hand raised.
