Chapter 19: The Common Guard

He did it three days later, at noon, in the Moon Hall, in front of everyone.

I did not know he was going to.

He had left the bed before dawn and said only that he had to see the elders.

I had let him go, because I thought it was a hearing about the poison.

I came in late with Torben at my shoulder.

Three hundred wolves stood in their places along the walls.

The three elders sat at the table, and Hallvard waited beside them in his long dark coat.

Anders stood alone in the middle of the floor, on the same boards where his wolf had lain down at my feet.

He wore a plain wool shirt.

He had taken off the dark coat of the Alpha-heir, and it hung on the registry table with the pen laid across it.

"I renounce the Alpha seat," he said.

The hall made one sound, the sound of three hundred people drawing a breath.

"I renounce it by blood and by right," Anders said. "I'll hold no rank in this pack. I want it written down and sworn."

"Nephew," Hallvard said softly. "Think what you're doing."

"I've thought. A mate was supposed to stand beside me in this seat."

He drew a breath.

"I won't hold it through a woman who owes me nothing." His eyes found me in the doorway. "She was right to refuse me. I'm done asking the pack to make her take me."
