Chapter 6: Terms

Anders found me on the gate road at noon with a folded paper in his glove.

The Council had met at dawn, and he looked like he had lost the argument and won it at the same time.

"They're offering three candidates," he said. "Three wolf-bearing women from the southern families. I'm supposed to pick one by Friday."

"Then pick one."

"I won't."

"Why?"

"Because I'd be signing a woman's name to my seat who I've never shared a meal with." He held out the paper. "And because every time I try to picture one of them at my table, I see you with a pen."

I took the paper without opening it.

The snow squeaked under my boots.

"If I stood beside you," I said slowly, "I'd want something in return."

His whole body went still.

"Name it."

"The Luna commands the gate guard. Under the old law, the Alpha can't overrule her on the border."

"You want the gate."

"I want the East Gate and everyone who walks it, from now until the Blood Moon."

"Why that moon?"

"Because it's the end of your ninety days."

He studied me for a long moment, and he plainly knew I was leaving something out.

"Go on," he said.

I kept my hands flat on my knees so they wouldn't shake.

"One. No bed. I'm your Luna on the form and nowhere else."

His jaw tightened. "Done."

"Two. No mark. I don't take your bite, and you don't take mine."

"Done."

"Three. No bond. When this is over I'm free, in the eyes of the Council and in my own skin."
